Petronet LNG Ltd's board of directors has approved the appointment of Sanjay Kumar, 59, as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, according to a regulatory filing. Kumar will take charge on May 13, 2027, succeeding A K Singh, whose extended tenure as chief executive will end on that date.
The Petronet board cleared the top-level appointment during a meeting held on October 2. Kumar will serve a five-year term as chief executive of India's largest liquefied natural gas importer. He currently serves as Director (Marketing) at state-owned GAIL (India) Ltd, one of the country's leading energy conglomerates.
Peternoet LNG is majority-owned by state-controlled oil and gas companies and plays a crucial role in meeting India's energy security objectives. Unlike typical public sector undertakings, the company is registered as a private limited entity and operates outside the oversight of government watchdogs such as the Comptroller and Auditor General and the Central Vigilance Commission. The company's governance structure also exempts it from Right to Information provisions.
Executives at Petronet benefit from compensation structures aligned with private sector standards and retire at 65 years of age, distinguishing the company's employment terms from those of conventional public sector organisations where the superannuation age is typically 60 years.
