Game developers call for better parental control education

MANILA — The Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP) has pushed back against placing responsibility for child online safety solely on parents, instead advocating for improved public awareness of existing parental control features.

During a Senate committee on women and children hearing on Tuesday, GDAP President Ria Lu emphasized that while parent involvement is crucial, the gaming industry and government must do more to educate families about the tools already available to monitor and restrict children's digital activities.

Lu's remarks came as lawmakers examine concerns regarding children's exposure to online risks through gaming platforms and digital content. The GDAP representative stressed that many parents remain unaware of comprehensive parental control options built into gaming systems and platforms, creating a knowledge gap that undermines child safety efforts.

The association's position reflects industry recognition that child protection requires a shared responsibility model. By improving information dissemination about existing safeguards, GDAP suggests parents can be better equipped to manage their children's online experiences without being left uninformed about available resources.

The Senate hearing continues to examine policies and measures needed to strengthen child protection in digital environments across the Philippines.
