Gampaha Magistrate transferred as IGP contempt case looms

Gampaha Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne has been transferred to the Judges' Training Institute with immediate effect, according to a transfer letter issued by Judicial Service Commission Secretary Prasanna Alwis. The reassignment comes amid proceedings initiated by Gunaratne against Inspector General of Police Piryantha Weerasuriya for alleged contempt of court.

Gunaratne had sought to commence contempt of court proceedings against the IGP, citing an alleged failure to comply with a court order. The circumstances surrounding the alleged non-compliance have not been detailed in official statements released thus far.

The timing of the transfer has drawn attention given its proximity to the contempt proceedings. The Judges' Training Institute, under which Gunaratne will now operate, functions as a professional development institution for members of the judiciary.

The transfer represents a significant administrative development within Sri Lanka's judicial system at a time when questions over police compliance with court directives remain under scrutiny. Further details regarding the underlying court order and the nature of the alleged non-compliance are awaited.
