Gandhi condemns state neglect after visiting Balaghat health crisis zone
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticized the absence of government services in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district, where over 30 children have died since July from preventable causes. The deaths, blamed on inadequate healthcare access among tribal communities, have prompted Gandhi to pledge raising the issue in Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi visited families in Balaghat district on Wednesday following a series of child deaths that have afflicted the region's tribal population since mid-year. Meeting with bereaved parents, the Congress leader expressed concern over the apparent lack of government presence and healthcare infrastructure in the area. "Government doesn't exist here," Gandhi remarked, highlighting the disconnect between state services and ground-level realities affecting vulnerable communities.
The mortality spike has claimed more than 30 children, with families attributing the deaths to infectious diseases, malnutrition, anaemia, and dehydration. Tribal residents have consistently cited insufficient access to medical facilities and basic healthcare services as contributing factors to the crisis. The deaths underscore persistent challenges in healthcare delivery across rural Madhya Pradesh, particularly in areas inhabited by indigenous populations.
Gandhi has committed to bringing the tribal community's plight to parliamentary attention, signalling the Congress party's intent to pressure the government on healthcare gaps. The visit reflects broader concerns about public health infrastructure and resource allocation in India's interior regions, where remote villages often lack adequate medical facilities and trained healthcare workers. Officials have not yet issued a comprehensive response to the allegations regarding healthcare access in the district.
