Ganga Canal closure till November 8 to disrupt water supply across UP, NCR

Water authorities have announced a closure of the Ganga Canal extending through November 8 to facilitate critical annual maintenance work. The shutdown will encompass desilting operations and ghat redevelopment initiatives along the canal's stretch, officials said.

The maintenance schedule is expected to significantly impact irrigation supplies across a 15-district zone in Uttar Pradesh, while also affecting water availability in adjoining areas of the National Capital Region. Farmers and water users across the affected regions have been advised to plan accordingly for the supply interruption.

The Ganga Canal, a major irrigation artery serving the Indo-Gangetic plains, requires periodic maintenance to maintain operational efficiency and water-carrying capacity. Authorities have indicated that the scheduled works are essential to ensure the canal's long-term functionality and structural integrity.

Water management officials stressed that the maintenance period, though disruptive in the short term, is necessary for preventing larger supply disruptions and maintaining service reliability. No alternative supply arrangements have been announced for the closure period.
