Gardeners warned against placing raw eggshells directly in plant pots
While eggshells are a valuable source of calcium for plants, placing them directly in soil can attract pests and inhibit growth. Proper preparation methods ensure plants benefit from this nutrient-rich organic material.

Gardening enthusiasts across India who use eggshells to supplement plant nutrition are being cautioned against a common practice that may backfire. Placing raw eggshell fragments directly into plant pots, while intended to provide calcium, can inadvertently attract insects and pests to the soil rather than nourishing the plants themselves.
Horticulturists recommend a more effective approach to utilizing eggshells as a natural fertilizer. The shells should first be thoroughly washed to remove any residual egg matter, then dried completely in sunlight. Once fully dried, they should be ground into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or other grinding tools.
The resulting eggshell powder can then be incorporated into compost or directly mixed into potting soil before planting. This preparation method breaks down the calcium-rich shells into forms more easily absorbed by plants while eliminating conditions that attract unwanted insects and pests.
For gardeners maintaining regular composting systems, crushed and dried eggshells can be added to compost heaps where they decompose naturally over time. When properly processed compost is later added to plant pots, it delivers sustained nutritional benefits without the drawbacks associated with raw shell fragments.
