Gas utility stocks surge on PNG incentive scheme nod

Mahanagar Gas Ltd, Indraprastha Gas Ltd, and Adani Total Gas Ltd led market gains on Tuesday, with shares rising between 5 and 6 per cent during intraday trading following approval of an incentive scheme for piped natural gas (PNG) distribution.

Mahanagar Gas climbed 5.5 per cent, while Indraprastha Gas advanced 5.3 per cent. Adani Total Gas, the third major player in the segment, recorded gains of 4.9 per cent amid broad-based investor optimism.

The sharp rally reflected market confidence that the government incentive scheme would support profitability and growth prospects for PNG distributors, which operate in urban areas across India. The scheme is expected to boost demand for natural gas as a cleaner fuel alternative and encourage household connections.

The three companies are among India's largest PNG operators, serving millions of residential and commercial consumers nationwide. Investor sentiment had been tempered in recent months by regulatory pressures and commodity price volatility, making the scheme approval a significant positive catalyst for the sector.
