Gatchalian pushes for targeted class suspensions to limit learning disruptions

MANILA — Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Saturday called for a shift toward more targeted, localized class suspension measures as the country grapples with prolonged disruptions to in-person schooling caused by recent weather disturbances.

Gatchalian expressed alarm over the cumulative impact of repeated widespread class suspensions on student learning outcomes. Rather than implementing nationwide closures that affect all regions indiscriminately, he advocated for a more granular approach that would suspend classes only in areas directly impacted by severe weather conditions.

The Senate leader's proposal addresses a critical gap in current policy, where weather events affecting specific provinces or municipalities often trigger national class suspensions. This blanket approach, Gatchalian argued, unnecessarily disrupts education in unaffected areas while contributing to academic setbacks across the country.

The call comes as schools nationwide continue managing the challenges of recovery and makeup classes following recent habagat rains that forced widespread temporary closures. Education officials are expected to review localized suspension protocols to balance student safety with the need to minimize learning disruption.
