Gatchalian urges unity behind new BARMM leadership

MANILA — Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian has urged political blocs, civil society organizations and local government units to throw their support behind the newly elected Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) administration, saying united backing is essential for ensuring regional stability and inclusive development.

In a statement released Monday, Gatchalian emphasized the importance of broad-based support as the BARMM's new leadership assumes office. He called on various stakeholders across the political spectrum to set aside partisan interests and work collectively toward the region's progress.

Gatchalian expressed optimism about the region's trajectory, suggesting that the BARMM is well-positioned to achieve its development objectives with the cooperation of key institutional and community actors. The Senate President's appeal underscores ongoing efforts to build consensus around governance initiatives in the autonomous region, which has been a focus of national peace and development efforts.

The BARMM was formally established in 2019 as part of the Bangsamoro peace agreement and operates under a special autonomous arrangement within the Philippines. The region encompasses five provinces in Mindanao with a predominantly Muslim population.
