Gavaskar urges ICC to ease player workload in new cricket calendar

Sunil Gavaskar has raised concerns about the relentless schedule imposed on Indian cricket players, calling on the ICC to reconsider workload management in the new four-year international cricket calendar set to commence in 2027.

The former India captain argued that cricketers should not be treated as commodities to be continuously exploited. "Players are not machines, nor are they sugarcane to be squeezed relentlessly," Gavaskar remarked, drawing attention to the physical and mental toll of back-to-back matches and tours.

Gavaskar's intervention comes amid growing concerns about player burnout in international cricket. The demanding schedule often leaves little time for rest and recovery, with Indian players frequently engaged in domestic leagues, bilateral series, and ICC tournaments throughout the year.

The ICC is currently finalizing its future cricket calendar, which will span four years beginning 2027. Gavaskar's appeal underscores the need for a balanced approach that allows players adequate time to recuperate while maintaining the sport's commercial viability and competitive schedule.
