Gen Z investors face mounting losses as trading activity surges

A significant portion of India's younger generation is experiencing losses in equity markets even as their overall trading volume remains robust. Data shows that 37 percent of investors below 25 years of age have incurred financial losses, underscoring the risks inherent in stock market participation for less experienced traders.

Despite these setbacks, Gen Z investors are not retreating from markets. Instead, trading activity among this age group has intensified, suggesting that younger Indians view market downturns as opportunities rather than reasons to exit. Financial advisors attribute this persistence to improved market access through digital platforms and growing financial literacy among younger demographics.

The rise in losses has coincided with increased complexity in tax compliance. The number of investors filing intricate tax returns has jumped to 82 percent, reflecting both the growing diversity of investment portfolios and stricter regulatory requirements. Younger investors navigating multiple asset classes now face considerable administrative burdens alongside market-related losses.

Market experts caution that while Gen Z's long-term investment horizon may justify sustained market participation, inadequate risk management and limited experience remain concerns. Financial planners recommend that younger investors focus on structured investment strategies and proper tax planning to mitigate losses and optimize returns.
