Gen Z's Digital-First Lifestyle Puzzles Older Generations, Study Suggests

A widening generational divide is emerging in India as Gen Z adopts lifestyle choices that baffle their older counterparts, reflecting broader shifts driven by technology and evolving social norms.

Among the habits most puzzling to those aged 40 and above is Gen Z's tendency to message colleagues and friends even when physically present in the same space, alongside their reluctance to provide immediate responses to communications. Additionally, younger workers increasingly prioritise personal time and boundaries, frequently change jobs in pursuit of better opportunities, and routinely question established conventions and rules that previous generations accepted without challenge.

What appears unconventional to older generations, however, represents normal workplace and social behaviour for Gen Z. Digital communication preferences, flexible attitudes toward employment, and emphasis on mental health and personal wellbeing have become integrated into their daily routines through exposure to technology and a rapidly changing social landscape.

These behavioural differences underscore how significantly technology adoption and shifting cultural values have reshaped attitudes toward work, communication and life priorities. As Gen Z enters the workforce in greater numbers across India, organisations and older colleagues are increasingly adapting to accommodate these generational preferences rather than expecting younger workers to conform to previous workplace norms.
