Generation Z's appetite for homeownership is reshaping India's housing finance landscape, with latest data revealing a sharp acceleration in first-time home buyers among younger demographics. According to Kotak Mahindra Bank figures, the number of home loan customers aged 25 to 30 years surged 86 percent between 2024 and 2026, reflecting a significant shift in wealth accumulation and financial priorities among India's youngest earning cohort.
The expansion underscores broader demographic trends as Gen Z enters peak earning years and seeks to build long-term assets through property ownership. The age group's growing appetite for mortgages reflects increased financial literacy, improved income levels, and changing lifestyle preferences favoring property investment over traditional savings methods.
Gen Z's share of overall home loan portfolios has expanded correspondingly, climbing from 6 percent to 9 percent during the same period. While still representing a minority of total housing finance volumes, the trajectory suggests accelerating adoption among younger Indians as lending institutions compete to attract first-time homebuyers through tailored products and competitive interest rates.
The trend aligns with India's broader economic expansion and rising urbanization, factors that have combined to increase housing demand across major metropolitan areas and tier-two cities. Lenders have responded by introducing flexible loan structures and reduced documentation requirements to appeal to younger borrowers entering the formal financial system.
