Generator failure triggered islandwide blackout on 17th, NSO finds
Sri Lanka's National System Operator has identified the root cause of the sudden nationwide power outage that struck the country on the 17th. A preliminary investigation report submitted to the Public Utilities Commission attributes the incident to a failure at a major generating unit.

The National System Operator (NSO) has concluded that a loss of 187 megawatts of electricity supply from the first generating unit at a key power station triggered the islandwide blackout at approximately 11:43 a.m. on the 17th, according to a preliminary investigation report submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).
The sudden withdrawal of the substantial power supply created an imbalance in the national grid, cascading into a complete system shutdown that affected consumers across the island. The NSO's findings provide the first official explanation for the outage, which disrupted businesses, hospitals, and households throughout Sri Lanka.
The preliminary report has been filed with PUCSL, the regulatory authority overseeing the country's utilities sector. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the precise technical factors that led to the generator failure and to implement measures preventing similar incidents in the future.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about Sri Lanka's power infrastructure and grid reliability as the nation works to stabilize its energy sector amid broader economic challenges.
