Delhi's municipal authorities face delays in importing 70 new mechanical road sweepers from Europe as Middle East tensions disrupt supply chains. The addition would significantly expand the capital's current cleaning capacity across its arterial road network.

Delhi's civic administration is bracing for postponements in its planned procurement of 70 mechanical road sweepers sourced from European manufacturers, with escalating Middle East tensions threatening to complicate the import process. The new machines are intended to bolster the capital's existing fleet and enhance street maintenance across its expanding road infrastructure.
Currently, the Delhi Municipal Corporation operates 66 mechanical road sweepers, which are strategically deployed across approximately 1,400 kilometres of arterial roads measuring more than 60 feet in width. These machines form the backbone of the city's mechanized street cleaning operations on major thoroughfares.
The proposed expansion would nearly double the operational capacity, significantly improving coverage and efficiency of road maintenance in Delhi. However, global supply chain disruptions stemming from regional instability are now casting uncertainty over delivery timelines and procurement schedules.
Officials have indicated that the geopolitical situation in the Middle East poses logistical challenges for European exporters, potentially affecting shipping routes and equipment availability. The civic authority is monitoring the situation closely as it seeks to push forward with its infrastructure improvement initiatives amid external headwinds.
