Georgia city police force resigns en masse after mayor's tracker row

A Georgia municipality is grappling with a significant law enforcement vacancy after all members of its full-time police force submitted resignations. The mass departure follows public disclosure that Mayor Craig Timmons had authorized GPS tracking of Police Chief Lamar Bunn's truck, citing concerns about the chief's timekeeping records.

Timmons acknowledged placing the tracking device on Bunn's vehicle as part of efforts to monitor the police chief's work hours. The mayor's actions have apparently precipitated the collective resignation, leaving the city without dedicated local police coverage.

Police Chief Bunn has rejected allegations of impropriety, maintaining that his conduct and time management were appropriate. Despite his denials, the resignations suggest broader tensions within the department regarding administrative practices and oversight methods.

In the interim, the city has turned to its county sheriff's office to provide police services while attempting to address the staffing shortage. Officials have not yet announced plans to recruit replacement officers or resolve the underlying disputes that prompted the resignations.
