Merz's visit to Kyiv underscores Germany's determination to stand with Ukraine as Moscow unleashes a sustained campaign of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles against major cities. The German leader stated that demonstrating continued support was essential, warning that failure to contain Russian aggression could have broader consequences for Europe.
"If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us," Merz said in remarks released Sunday. He assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their meeting that Germany would maintain its assistance to Kyiv in confronting the Russian offensive.
Merz characterized the German-Ukrainian relationship as a mutual partnership rather than a one-directional commitment. He highlighted collaborative efforts between German and Ukrainian companies in developing technologies, framing such cooperation as strengthening both nations' security and economic resilience.
Meanwhile, the conflict's military dimension continues to intensify. Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian oil infrastructure and industrial facilities, while Moscow sustains pressure on Ukrainian civilian areas through advanced weaponry designed to overwhelm air defence systems. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha indicated that discussions during the German chancellor's visit would centre on strengthening Ukraine's defence capabilities and long-term security arrangements.
