Germany signals willingness to advance submarine partnership with India

Germany is prepared to negotiate a forward-leaning defence agreement with India, including potential submarine cooperation, according to statements from the German ambassador to New Delhi. The diplomatic overture reflects deepening military ties between Berlin and India as both nations reassess their defence posture.

Ambassador Wieck attributed the shift to what he characterized as an increasingly hostile international environment. Both countries have substantially expanded their military investments in recent years, prompting closer examination of strategic partnerships that could enhance operational capabilities and technological advancement.

The submarine cooperation represents a significant expansion of Indo-German defence relations, which have traditionally focused on training exchanges and joint exercises. Such agreements typically involve technology transfer, joint development initiatives, and long-term naval cooperation agreements.

India has been actively diversifying its defence partnerships amid tensions with neighbouring Pakistan and China. Germany, meanwhile, has reassessed its strategic positioning in Asia following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's growing military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.
