Germany Takes Delivery of First F-35 Fighter Jet
Germany has received its first Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft at a ceremony in the United States, marking a major milestone in Berlin's military modernisation programme. The delivery represents the beginning of a substantial fleet upgrade as Germany replaces its aging Tornado warplanes.

The handover ceremony took place at a US military facility, symbolising Germany's commitment to strengthening its air defence capabilities and aligning with NATO standards. The F-35, a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, represents a significant leap in technological capability compared to the Tornado aircraft currently operated by the German Air Force.
Germany's procurement plan calls for a total of 35 F-35 jets under an agreement finalised in 2022. The acquisition is part of broader defence spending increases across Europe, driven partly by regional security concerns and NATO commitments.
The F-35 programme involves multiple allied nations and serves as a cornerstone of NATO air superiority. The aircraft's advanced avionics, sensor capabilities, and stealth features position it as one of the most technologically advanced combat platforms in operation globally.
Germany's Tornado fleet, which has served the nation since the 1980s, was scheduled for retirement as newer platforms became available. The transition to F-35 operations will require additional pilot training, maintenance infrastructure, and logistics support investments over the coming years.
The delivery comes as European defence spending continues to rise, with NATO members increasing military budgets in response to evolving security challenges in the region.
