Getty Museum acquires rare 17th-century Velázquez portrait for LA collection

The J. Paul Getty Museum has secured a major addition to its art holdings with the acquisition of Portrait of the Count-Duke of Olivares, a 17th-century masterpiece by Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. The work entered the Getty's collection from a private holding, representing a landmark moment for the Los Angeles institution.

Originally commissioned for Cardinal Francesco Barberini during the 1620s, the portrait exemplifies Velázquez's renowned skill in capturing the dignity and authority of his subjects. The Count-Duke of Olivares served as a powerful figure in the Spanish court, and this painting stands as a testament to the artist's prominence among European nobility during the baroque period.

The acquisition underscores the Getty Museum's continued commitment to expanding its European Old Masters collection.
