Gia Lai Province is strengthening its fisheries management through mandatory electronic catch logging, a move aimed at meeting European Commission standards for legal and sustainable fishing practices. The province has implemented digital recording systems for all fishing vessels measuring 12 metres or longer, replacing traditional paper-based logs with smartphone applications.
The transition to electronic logging represents a significant step in Vietnam's efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. By digitizing catch records, authorities gain real-time visibility into fishing activities and can more effectively track the origin and legality of seafood products entering both domestic and export markets.
According to provincial officials, fishermen in Gia Lai have adapted quickly to the new system following its launch three months ago. The smartphone-based platform allows vessel operators to record catch data directly from their boats, streamlining the documentation process while improving accuracy and compliance with European Commission fisheries standards.
The initiative aligns with broader regional efforts to enhance seafood traceability and combat IUU fishing. Ho Chi Minh City and other coastal provinces have similarly intensified enforcement measures and traceability protocols to address outstanding fisheries management challenges and maintain access to international markets.
Vietnam's fishing industry, a significant economic sector, faces increasing pressure from international buyers to demonstrate compliance with legal and sustainable practices. The adoption of digital logging systems in Gia Lai reflects the country's commitment to strengthening oversight mechanisms and meeting the regulatory requirements of major trading partners.
