Authorities in Gia Lai Province have petitioned Vietnam's central government for permission to conduct a multi-year trial of autonomous electric flying taxis near Quy Nhon, the province's major coastal tourism destination. The proposed testing period would run from October 2024 through December 2028, subject to official approval.
The initiative reflects growing interest across Asia in advanced aerial mobility solutions for urban transport and tourism applications. Electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, commonly known as eVTOLs, are being developed by manufacturers worldwide as potential alternatives to ground-based transportation in congested or hard-to-reach areas.
Quy Nhon's designation as the trial site appears aimed at leveraging the city's status as a tourist hub while potentially avoiding the airspace complexities of larger metropolitan centers. The coastal location and existing tourism infrastructure could provide controlled conditions for testing the technology's feasibility and safety protocols.
If approved, the trial would mark a significant step forward in Vietnam's adoption of emerging aviation technologies. The multi-year timeframe suggests authorities plan a gradual, phased approach to assess operational, safety, and regulatory requirements before any broader commercial deployment.
