Giant 240-wheeled reactor stalled in Varanasi amid infrastructure hurdle
A massive reactor imported from Belgium for India's first biopolymer plant has been halted in Varanasi due to an overbridge obstruction. Authorities are preparing to remove the structure to allow the specialized transporter carrying the equipment to proceed.

A colossal reactor being transported on a 240-wheeled specialized trailer has come to a standstill in Varanasi, creating a logistical challenge for one of India's most ambitious industrial projects. The equipment, shipped from Belgium, is destined for a biopolymer manufacturing facility under construction in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.
The ₹3,080-crore biopolymer plant represents India's first major venture into the sector and has been designed to accommodate the oversized reactor, which cannot pass beneath an existing footbridge in Varanasi. Authorities have begun preparations to temporarily dismantle the overbridge structure to facilitate the transporter's passage toward Lakhimpur Kheri.
The project has drawn considerable attention at the national level, with sources indicating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate the facility in November, pending the successful transit of critical equipment and the plant's readiness. The biopolymer plant is expected to mark a significant milestone in India's chemical manufacturing capabilities once operational.
The delayed movement of the specialized transporter has highlighted the infrastructure constraints that large-scale industrial projects sometimes encounter in India, though state authorities appear committed to resolving the obstruction promptly to maintain project timelines.
