Gir Safari Opens Early, Welcomes Hundreds to Gujarat Wildlife Reserve

The primary safari operations at Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary have commenced following an early conclusion to the monsoon season and completion of essential road and causeway maintenance work. The early opening allows visitors to experience the sanctuary's famed Asiatic lion population during optimal safari conditions.

Approximately 100 tourists ventured into the forest on the inaugural day of operations. The group was rewarded with multiple wildlife sightings, including two lionesses, three cubs, and two adult male lions—a significant encounter rate that underscores the sanctuary's thriving population of the endangered species.

Sasan Gir, located near Junagadh in Gujarat, remains India's primary habitat for Asiatic lions. The sanctuary typically operates seasonal safari programs timed to coincide with optimal wildlife viewing conditions and completion of monsoon-related maintenance work. The eight-day advance opening this year reflects accelerated infrastructure readiness and favorable weather patterns.

The sanctuary's lion population has been a conservation success story, with numbers rebounding significantly from the early 20th century when fewer than 50 individuals remained in the wild. Today, the reserve supports several hundred lions, making it critical for the species' long-term survival.
