The US Geological Survey has determined that a catastrophic glacial collapse and debris flow, rather than an earthquake, caused the devastating floods that swept through Nepal this week, killing over 160 people.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) revised its assessment of the seismic event that accompanied Nepal's devastating flash floods, attributing the disaster to a glacial collapse and debris flow rather than earthquake activity. The agency upgraded the magnitude reading of the seismic event to 5.2 from an initial 4.4 magnitude assessment as it conducted additional analysis of long-period seismic waves and satellite imagery. "This event was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Additional analysis of nearby seismic stations, long period seismic waves, and satellite imagery led to the determination that the seismic event was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow, and that no earthquake had occurred," the USGS stated. The torrential floods originated in Tibet on Wednesday and swept through Rasuwa and Dhading districts in Nepal with devastating force. The disaster has claimed 162 lives while 750 people remain missing, including 133 Indian nationals. The flash floods have highlighted the growing risks posed by glacial instability in the high Himalayan region, where rising temperatures and changing environmental conditions are destabilizing mountain terrain.
