Glacial Lake Outburst in Bhutan Triggers High Alert in Bengal Districts

West Bengal's district administrations have activated emergency protocols after receiving reports of water release from a glacial lake in Bhutan, officials said Tuesday. The discharge from Shintafu Lake has prompted precautionary measures across two of the state's northern districts, with particular focus on areas adjacent to the Sankosh River, which flows along the India-Bhutan border.

Manoj Kumar Oraon, forest minister and legislator from Kumaraigram, has appealed to residents in vulnerable areas near the Sankosh River to relocate to higher ground as a precautionary measure. The administration has established protocols to monitor water levels and coordinate with disaster management teams.

Glacial lake outburst floods, known as GLOFs, pose significant risks to downstream communities in the Himalayan region. Such events can trigger flash floods with minimal warning, endangering lives and infrastructure in low-lying settlements. Authorities in the affected districts have increased surveillance along river systems and are maintaining contact with counterparts in Bhutan to track developments.

District officials in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri have advised residents to remain vigilant and heed official directives. While the extent of the discharge and its potential impact on Indian territory remain under assessment, the precautionary approach underscores the region's vulnerability to such natural events during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.
