Glacier avalanches pose significant risk to Badrinath region, study warns
A new study has identified nearly 400 buildings in the Badrinath area that could be threatened by glacier-related avalanches. The research suggests extensive infrastructure and forest cover in the sacred pilgrimage region face potential hazards from the natural phenomenon.

Research into avalanche risks in the Badrinath region of Uttarakhand has identified substantial exposure to natural hazards, with close to 398 buildings lying in potential avalanche paths. The study also mapped additional vulnerable infrastructure, including 2.66 kilometres of transport routes and 15.57 hectares of forest area that could be affected by such events.
Badrinath, one of India's four holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites, sits in a high-altitude region of the Himalayas where glacial dynamics create ongoing geological risks. The sacred shrine attracts thousands of devotees annually, making the findings particularly significant for local administrators and disaster management authorities.
The research indicates that avalanches triggered by glacial activity represent a substantive threat to the region's built environment and critical infrastructure. The identification of specific vulnerable zones provides critical data for urban planning and risk mitigation strategies in the area.
Utterakhandi authorities have not yet issued formal responses to the study's findings. The results underscore the need for comprehensive disaster preparedness measures in high-altitude pilgrimage centres, where visitor numbers and infrastructure expansion continue to increase amid evolving climate conditions.
