A catastrophic flash flood that swept through a Himalayan valley in Nepal on Wednesday may have been triggered by the sudden collapse of a glacier's lower section, according to preliminary analysis by geophysicists reviewing satellite data from the incident.

Satellite imagery obtained by Planet Labs and examined by experts shows evidence consistent with a large portion of glacier ice breaking away and plunging hundreds of metres onto the valley floor below. The impact and subsequent meltwater surge appear to have generated the torrent that destroyed settlements and infrastructure downstream.

The remote location near Nepal's border with Tibet has made it difficult for authorities to assess the full scale of casualties and damage. However, officials confirmed that the flooding claimed multiple lives and displaced residents across the affected area.

Glacier collapses and outburst floods are an increasing concern across the Himalayan region, with climate change accelerating ice melt and destabilising high-altitude snow and ice formations. The incident underscores the growing hazards posed by environmental changes in one of Asia's most geologically sensitive regions.

Investigators are continuing to gather data from the site to fully understand the sequence of events and assess whether early warning systems might have provided crucial evacuation time for communities in the flood's path.
