Glacier collapse triggered Nepal flash flood disaster, China says

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said preliminary joint assessments by Chinese and Nepalese experts and official institutions pointed to the glacier collapse as the probable cause of Wednesday's devastating floods. "According to their analysis, the disaster may have been triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier in Nepal," Lin told reporters at a media briefing. The disaster engulfed the border region with massive force, destroying settlements, roads, bridges and hydropower installations across a wide area. The death toll in Nepal reached 469, while Tibet reported three fatalities from the flood-related devastation. The joint assessment indicates broad agreement between Beijing and Kathmandu on the disaster's underlying cause, with both countries' authorities and scientific institutions collaborating on the initial investigation. The flash floods marked one of the deadliest weather-related disasters to strike the Himalayan region in recent years, highlighting the increasing risks posed by climate-induced changes to high-altitude glaciers.
