The incident unfolded as the glacier, weakened by a combination of environmental factors, separated from its mooring on the mountain slope before cascading downward with considerable force.

The resulting avalanche released substantial volumes of ice, rock and debris that accelerated down the mountainside, devastating everything in its path. As the avalanche descended into lower elevations, the accumulated material liquefied upon contact with water sources, transforming into a torrent of floodwaters that swept through downstream communities.
