Global airline body urges talks before Mumbai airport capacity cuts

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) to engage in dialogue with airlines before proceeding with substantial reductions in international flight capacity at the city's primary airport.

MIAL, which operates Mumbai airport, had requested approval to trim international departure slots by approximately 33 percent from October 25. The reduction is linked to the gradual transfer of flight operations to the new Navi Mumbai International Airport as it ramps up services.

IATA's intervention signals industry concern about the impact of sudden capacity constraints on flight schedules and airline operations. The global airline body emphasized that such significant operational adjustments require coordinated planning among all stakeholders to minimize disruption to air connectivity in one of India's busiest aviation hubs.

The standoff reflects the broader challenges faced by Mumbai's aviation sector as it transitions to a multi-airport model. While the new Navi Mumbai facility is expected to ease congestion at the aging Mumbai airport, the transition period requires careful management to ensure adequate capacity and prevent service interruptions.

Discussions between MIAL, IATA, and individual airlines are expected to continue as authorities work toward a transition plan that balances capacity requirements with infrastructure development at both facilities.
