Global battery recyclers face headwinds as EV growth decelerates
Battery recycling companies outside China are struggling to maintain profitability as the pace of electric vehicle adoption slows worldwide. The sector faces mounting pressures from reduced feedstock availability and Chinese competitors' dominance.

Battery recyclers in developed markets are confronting a challenging business environment as growth in electric vehicle sales moderates following years of rapid expansion. The slowdown in EV adoption has reduced the volume of spent batteries available for processing, squeezing margins for recyclers already grappling with high operational costs and capital requirements.
While the global battery recycling sector remains nascent, Chinese companies have secured a commanding market position through scale, government support, and integrated supply chains. Recyclers in Europe, North America, and other regions report difficulty competing on price and efficiency, threatening the viability of operations that have invested heavily in new facilities and technology.
Industry participants point to several interconnected challenges: the extended lifespan of modern EV batteries means recyclers must wait years before collecting significant volumes, while the diversity of battery chemistries and pack designs complicates standardization. Additionally, raw material prices for recovered lithium, cobalt, and nickel have fluctuated, undermining the economics of recycling operations.
As vehicle electrification continues its longer-term trajectory, stakeholders anticipate recycling will eventually become crucial to supply chain resilience and sustainability goals. However, near-term viability for many non-Chinese recyclers remains uncertain without technological breakthroughs, regulatory incentives, or consolidation within the sector.
