Global energy buffers at critical lows, warns ADNOC chief

The world's capacity to absorb supply shocks has significantly diminished, with diesel reserves in several regions hitting their lowest seasonal levels in more than three decades. Liquefied natural gas markets are also facing substantial shortfalls that could strain energy security.

Global energy buffers at critical lows, warns ADNOC chief

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company's chief executive has raised alarms about the deteriorating state of global energy reserves, warning that the world's ability to weather supply disruptions has been substantially eroded. The assessment underscores growing concerns about energy security as geopolitical tensions and supply chain vulnerabilities continue to weigh on commodity markets across Asia and beyond.

Diesel stockpiles in several regions have plummeted to 35-year seasonal lows, indicating severely constrained inventories at a time when refineries typically maintain larger buffers against winter demand spikes and unforeseen supply interruptions. The depletion of these strategic reserves leaves markets vulnerable to price volatility and potential shortages should production disruptions occur.

The liquefied natural gas sector faces similarly acute challenges, with a supply gap of approximately 600 billion cubic feet weighing on global markets. This deficit has intensified competition for available LNG cargoes, particularly in Asia where demand remains robust and supply sources remain concentrated among a limited number of exporters.

The confluence of tightened diesel reserves and LNG supply gaps reflects broader structural challenges in global energy markets, where investment in new production capacity has lagged demand growth and geopolitical risks have constrained traditional supply routes. Energy-dependent economies throughout Southeast Asia and beyond face mounting pressure to secure adequate supplies amid these constrained conditions.
