Global life expectancy nearly recovers to pre-pandemic levels

Global life expectancy has nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels, according to the World Health Organization's latest data. The global average reached 73.3 years in 2023, just 0.1 years below the 73.4 years recorded in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic swept across the world.

The recovery marks a significant turnaround for public health after the severe disruptions caused by COVID-19, which saw life expectancy decline sharply during 2020 and 2021. The rebound reflects improvements in pandemic management, the widespread availability of vaccines, and the restoration of essential health services that had been disrupted during lockdowns and health emergencies.

The near-recovery of life expectancy demonstrates resilience in global health systems, though regional variations remain significant. Different countries experienced different levels of impact during the pandemic, and recovery rates have varied based on vaccination rates, healthcare capacity, and economic stability.

The WHO's findings suggest that sustained efforts to strengthen health systems and maintain vaccination programmes will be critical to building on this progress and continuing to improve life expectancy globally in coming years.
