Global security threats pose growing risk to region, Malaysia PM warns

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned on Tuesday that security threats emanating from global hotspots are closer to Southeast Asia's shores than commonly perceived, urging Malaysia and neighbouring countries to strengthen their defences.

Pointing to recent cyberattacks in Europe, the United States and Japan, Anwar highlighted how vulnerabilities in major economies could have cascading effects across the broader region. He underscored that Malaysia must remain alert to emerging threats and bolster its security posture accordingly.

The warning reflects growing concerns across Southeast Asia about the region's exposure to international security risks, from cyber warfare to infrastructure attacks targeting critical systems. Analysts have noted that developing economies in the region often lack the sophisticated defences available to more industrialised nations, making them potentially attractive targets.

Malaysia has in recent years invested in cybersecurity capabilities and regional partnerships to counter such threats. Anwar's comments come as several Asia-Pacific nations reassess their security strategies amid mounting geopolitical tensions and the increasing sophistication of transnational cyber operations.
