Global uncertainties, oil prices threaten India's investment prospects

India's investment appeal is facing headwinds from multiple external shocks, with the government's economic review warning that policymakers cannot rely on past growth achievements to sustain capital inflows. The Monthly Economic Review for September noted that geopolitical and geoeconomic uncertainties are reshaping investment calculations globally, presenting a particular challenge for developing economies seeking to maintain growth momentum.

While India's economy expanded at a robust 7.8 percent in the first quarter ending June, high-frequency indicators for July and August suggest the pace of activity has moderated. The review attributed this slowdown partly to an oil price spike in September and continued depreciation pressure on the Indian rupee, which have coincided with a deterioration in global conditions.

Beyond near-term macroeconomic headwinds, the Finance Ministry identified structural concerns affecting India's competitive positioning. The country's limited participation in global artificial intelligence developments represents a missed opportunity, the review suggested, as these emerging technologies reshape investment patterns worldwide. Trade policy uncertainties, particularly around US trade relations, have further complicated the environment for capital allocation decisions.

The review underscored that India must focus on policy reforms to strengthen its economic resilience and investment attractiveness. According to the Finance Ministry, maintaining growth rates comparable to recent quarters will require sustained policy attention and targeted measures to address both immediate vulnerabilities and longer-term structural challenges in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
