The United Nations' meteorological body has warned that critical freshwater systems worldwide are becoming increasingly unstable, presenting mounting challenges for water security and climate adaptation efforts. Disruptions to rivers, glaciers and underground aquifers—which supply drinking water to billions—are intensifying as global climate patterns shift, the World Meteorological Organization cautioned in its latest assessment.

The organisation identified El Niño as a significant driver of heightened hydrological volatility, noting the climate phenomenon is likely to trigger more severe and frequent extremes including prolonged droughts in some regions and catastrophic flooding in others. This combination threatens agricultural productivity, hydropower generation and drinking water supplies across Asia and beyond.

For Malaysia and neighbouring Southeast Asian nations, where monsoon patterns and tropical precipitation already create variable water conditions, the findings underscore growing risks to infrastructure and food security. The region's glacier-dependent water sources in higher elevations face particular vulnerability as warming temperatures accelerate ice melt and alter seasonal flow patterns.

Experts emphasise that adaptations to water management systems—including improved early warning networks, enhanced storage capacity and cross-border water-sharing agreements—will be essential to mitigate impacts as the water cycle becomes less predictable. The UN agency has called for strengthened monitoring and investment in climate-resilient water infrastructure.
