Goa slashes aviation fuel tax to 7%, joining Delhi and Maharashtra

Goa has announced a significant cut in the Value Added Tax levied on Aviation Turbine Fuel, reducing the rate to 7 per cent from the existing 15 per cent. The new tax rate will come into effect on October 24, marking a substantial reduction in aviation fuel costs for operators at the state's airports.

The decision brings Goa in line with recent fiscal measures adopted by other major Indian states. Delhi had previously reduced its ATF VAT to 7 per cent from 25 per cent, while Maharashtra implemented a cut to 7 per cent from 18 per cent. These coordinated reductions across multiple states reflect a broader push to ease the financial burden on airlines and improve the competitiveness of regional aviation hubs.

The aviation industry has long advocated for lower fuel taxes, citing the high operational costs that constrain fleet expansion and route development. By lowering ATF VAT, states aim to make their airports more attractive to carriers and potentially stimulate aviation traffic and related economic activity.

The timing of Goa's reduction suggests an effort to maintain competitive parity with neighbouring states and other major aviation centres across India, where fuel cost remains a significant factor in airline operational economics.
