GOF dismantles illegal sand mining operation, seizes RM13 million in assets

The General Operations Force (GOF) has dealt a significant blow to illegal sand mining operations in Malaysia, dismantling seven unlicensed extraction sites spread across three states. The multi-agency operation resulted in the seizure of assets valued at RM13 million, including machinery, vehicles, and extracted materials.

The coordinated crackdown targeted sites engaged in unauthorised sand mining, a persistent environmental and regulatory concern in Malaysia. Sand mining, when conducted illegally, poses substantial risks to riverine ecosystems, water quality, and surrounding communities. The operations disrupted supply chains that feed into the construction sector, which has long faced pressure to source raw materials responsibly.

The GOF, which falls under the Ministry of Defence, conducted the raids as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen enforcement against illegal mining activities nationwide. The agency worked alongside other authorities to identify and apprehend operations flouting environmental and licensing regulations.

Industry observers note that illegal sand mining remains a challenge despite heightened regulatory scrutiny. Authorities continue to emphasise that all sand extraction activities must be conducted under proper licensing and environmental compliance frameworks to prevent ecological degradation and ensure sustainable resource management.
