Gold ETFs attract $18 billion in August as European funds surge

Gold exchange-traded funds attracted $18 billion in investor inflows during August, according to the World Gold Council, marking a significant surge in demand for the precious metal through these investment vehicles.

Europe-listed gold ETFs spearheaded the movement, capturing the bulk of global inflows as investors sought exposure to gold amid broader market uncertainties. The region's funds demonstrated particularly strong momentum throughout the month, reflecting sustained European appetite for bullion-backed investment products.

North American investors entered the market more cautiously in early August, with modest inflows characterizing the opening weeks. However, demand shifted dramatically during the week commencing August 17, when North American funds alone recorded approximately $4 billion in new investments, signalling a sharp reversal in investor sentiment toward gold assets.

The substantial August inflows underscore growing investor interest in gold as a defensive asset class. Exchange-traded funds continue to serve as a primary conduit for retail and institutional investors seeking gold exposure without physical storage complications, with their accessibility and transparency making them increasingly attractive during periods of financial market volatility.
