Police in Chennai have arrested two suspects following the recovery of gold bars worth more than ₹2.08 crore in a major smuggling operation. The arrests mark a significant blow to gold trafficking networks operating in the region.
The accused had concealed three oval-shaped capsules containing a yellow-coloured paste within their bodies. Upon extraction and subsequent processing, the capsules yielded gold ingots weighing 924 grams and 731 grams respectively, indicating a sophisticated smuggling method designed to evade detection at airport and border checkpoints.
The seizure points to the continued prevalence of gold smuggling through South India, a long-standing challenge for customs and law enforcement agencies. Officials have intensified operations to intercept contraband gold entering the country, particularly through major transportation hubs.
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody as investigations continue into the source of the smuggled gold and potential distribution networks. Authorities are examining whether the operation was part of a larger smuggling syndicate.
