Google has launched a series of artificial intelligence-driven programmes targeting India's farming communities, educational institutions and small business operators, signalling a significant expansion of its technology deployment in the country's grassroots economy.
Among its agricultural initiatives, the company is collaborating on developing climate-resilient variants of jowar, or sorghum, a staple crop in India's semi-arid regions. The effort addresses growing concerns about crop vulnerability to changing weather patterns. Simultaneously, Google is deploying SMS-based advisory services to deliver agronomic guidance directly to farmers' mobile devices, capitalising on India's extensive mobile penetration even in remote areas.
Beyond agriculture, Google's initiatives extend to India's education sector, where the company is working to train teachers in digital literacy and pedagogical techniques. These efforts aim to enhance classroom instruction and student outcomes across India's diverse educational landscape. The initiatives also encompass support for small and medium enterprises, helping micro-entrepreneurs access digital tools and business intelligence resources.
The programmes reflect Google's broader strategy to address India's development challenges through technology, targeting segments of the population with limited existing access to digital resources. By focusing on climate resilience, agricultural productivity, teacher capability and entrepreneurial support, Google is positioning its AI capabilities as instrumental to India's economic and social advancement.
