Google has launched a dedicated website enabling anyone to verify the authenticity of digital media in an era of increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence. The SynthID tool, which was previously restricted to a limited group of testers, can now analyse images, videos and audio clips to determine whether they were generated by AI systems.

The public rollout represents a significant step in addressing concerns about synthetic media and deepfakes, which have become increasingly difficult for the average person to distinguish from genuine content. As AI-generated images and videos become more convincing, tools that can identify manipulated or entirely fabricated media have grown more critical for maintaining trust in digital information.

Users can access the SynthID website to upload their media files for analysis. The technology works by detecting digital fingerprints embedded in AI-generated content, marking a practical approach to tackling misinformation in an increasingly complex digital landscape. Google has positioned the tool as part of broader efforts to promote responsible AI development and use.

The move comes amid growing regulatory and public scrutiny of synthetic media capabilities. While the tool does not guarantee 100 per cent accuracy in all cases, it provides users with a resource to assess whether content may have been artificially generated, offering an additional layer of verification in an environment where visual and audio evidence can no longer be automatically trusted.
