Google's India smartphone manufacturing push lags as Vietnam leads production

Google's strategy to expand smartphone manufacturing in India has failed to gain significant momentum, with Vietnam and China continuing to dominate production of the company's Pixel devices. The American technology firm, which ships approximately 12 million smartphones worldwide annually, has maintained substantial production capacity in Southeast Asia rather than meaningfully scaling operations in India.

The slow progress in establishing India as a major Pixel manufacturing hub reflects the challenges faced by global technology companies in diversifying their supply chains away from established production centres in China and Vietnam. Despite India's efforts to attract electronics manufacturing through various government incentive schemes, Google has not substantially shifted its production footprint to the country.

Vietnam has emerged as Google's preferred alternative manufacturing location, receiving the bulk of Pixel production that the company has moved outside China. This concentration in Vietnam demonstrates the practical advantages of existing infrastructure, skilled labour pools, and established supply chain networks in Southeast Asia compared to India's emerging manufacturing capabilities.

Google's cautious approach to India manufacturing comes as other technology companies also grapple with balancing production diversification with operational efficiency. The company's gradual rather than aggressive India pivot suggests that building manufacturing capacity remains a longer-term undertaking than many market observers initially anticipated.
