Google to disable AI features by default for student accounts

Google is implementing new default settings that will turn off artificial intelligence-powered search capabilities for school children. The move prevents educational institutions from providing students access to Google Search without AI features.

Google has announced changes to its search and AI offerings that will automatically disable artificial intelligence features for student accounts. The technology giant is positioning the measure as a step toward ensuring age-appropriate digital experiences in educational settings across the region.

Under the new framework, schools will be unable to provide students with Google Search while keeping AI-generated summaries and features switched off. This means educational institutions will need to make a deliberate choice to enable AI capabilities if they wish to do so, rather than having those features available by default.

The move reflects growing concerns among educators and parents about the role of artificial intelligence in classroom environments. By establishing AI as an opt-in rather than default feature for younger users, Google appears to be responding to calls for more controlled technology deployment in schools.

The changes are expected to apply to student accounts managed through Google Workspace for Education. Schools implementing the platform will need to review their settings and make informed decisions about which AI-powered tools align with their educational objectives and institutional policies.
