MANILA – The national government has earmarked P300 million for the rehabilitation of the Agana Bridge, which collapsed under pressure from swollen river currents and relentless rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon season, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced on Wednesday.
The chief executive indicated that pedestrian access to the bridge could be restored within seven days, though the timeline for full vehicular traffic remains under assessment. The bridge's structural failure has disrupted transportation in the affected area and highlighted infrastructure vulnerabilities during the monsoon season.
The allocation represents part of the administration's broader infrastructure recovery efforts in response to weather-related disasters. Engineering teams are reportedly assessing the extent of damage to determine the scope of repair work required for complete restoration.
The southwest monsoon, which typically brings heavy rainfall to the Philippines from May through September, has been a recurring challenge for aging infrastructure across the archipelago.
