Government blocks Opposition no-confidence motion against Speaker

The government has escalated tensions in Parliament by attempting to derail an Opposition no-confidence motion against Speaker Dr Jagath Wickramaratne, arguing that certain allegations in the motion remain sub judice and require amendment before proceeding.

The move marks a significant escalation in parliamentary confrontation, with the ruling coalition deploying procedural objections to block the motion from advancing. Government representatives contend that several charges contained in the Opposition's submission fall under active legal proceedings and therefore cannot be debated in their current form.

The Opposition has firmly rejected the government's approach, dismissing the delay as an attempt to obstruct legitimate parliamentary scrutiny. Opposition lawmakers have insisted that the motion proceed without amendment and have demanded an immediate vote on the no-confidence measure.

The standoff underscores deepening divisions within Parliament, with both sides digging in over procedural grounds. The Speaker's office has not yet issued a formal ruling on whether the motion meets parliamentary requirements or whether amendments are necessary before debate can commence.

The controversy comes amid broader tensions between the government and Opposition over parliamentary accountability and the Speaker's impartiality in recent legislative proceedings.
