Government bond yields surge 28 bps in October, raising New Delhi's debt servicing costs

Government bond yields in India surged approximately 28 basis points during October, with the 10-year benchmark security climbing to 7.474 per cent from 7.193 per cent at the start of the month, signaling mounting pressure on the Centre's interest expenditure.

The steep ascent in yields has compounded concerns about the government's financing costs at a time when fiscal consolidation remains a policy priority. Financial sector experts attribute the rise to a combination of headwinds, including elevated global crude oil prices, a worldwide bond market selloff, tightening liquidity conditions across Indian banks, and expectations of further rate increases by the Reserve Bank of India.

"If yields stabilize at these elevated levels, the cost of financing the fiscal deficit will increase materially, adding fresh pressure on interest spending and constraining the government's fiscal flexibility," said V Ramachandra Reddy, head of treasury operations at Karur Vysya Bank.

Market watchers note that the yield surge reflects broader global trends alongside domestic monetary policy dynamics. The RBI's hawkish stance, maintained to contain inflation, has particularly influenced investor expectations regarding the interest rate trajectory, contributing to the upward pressure on government security valuations across the yield curve.
