The government on Wednesday defended its handling of the IDBI Bank divestment process, asserting that all stages of the transaction followed approved procedures and best practices for public sector asset sales. Officials clarified that the bidding framework allowed prospective purchasers to undertake independent valuations and submit sealed bids, ensuring confidentiality and competitive integrity throughout the process. To further strengthen the valuation framework, independent agencies were engaged to conduct impartial assessments of the bank's enterprise value. These third-party evaluations served as reference points during the transaction evaluation, officials said. The government's statement comes as policymakers have sought to accelerate divestment of non-core public sector assets to bolster state finances. The IDBI Bank sale represents a significant component of the broader privatization agenda aimed at optimizing the portfolio of government-owned financial institutions. Officials maintained that the multi-layered approach to valuation and bidding ensured transparency while protecting taxpayer interests in the transaction.
