The government has moved to dispel reports of a financial support package for AirAsia, stating no such agreement has been concluded with the airline. Officials made the clarification amid speculation about potential state backing for the carrier.
AirAsia maintains a dominant position in air services to Malaysia's eastern states, commanding two-thirds of all flight operations to and from Sabah and Sarawak. The airline's extensive network in East Malaysia underscores its strategic importance to regional connectivity and commerce.
The denial comes as the aviation sector continues navigating challenges in the post-pandemic recovery period. Airlines across the region have sought various forms of government support to stabilize operations and maintain essential routes, particularly to less commercially viable destinations.
AirAsia's presence in East Malaysia includes services from its main hub, connecting numerous communities across Sabah and Sarawak to major cities throughout Malaysia and the region. The airline's withdrawal or significant reduction of services would substantially impact connectivity and economic activity in the eastern states.
